Winter is usually a quiet time in the garden. It won't be long before spring arrives and you’ll be caught up in the frenzy of weeding, fertilizing and planting your garden! Getting your garden ready early will help make spring a little less hectic.
- Blanket your garden bed with at least a half-inch layer of worm castings (more is even better). The Castings will be a fresh infusion of nutrient-rich organic matter, and will improve the soil’s ability to handle water as well as nourish your crops.
- Another good preparation is to cultivate your soil. Rain, gravity and other forces can cause soil to become compacted over time, so loosening it before planting should be a priority.
- Apply more worm castings to the degree that matches the needs of the crops you are planting. Light feeding plants only need a small amount and heavier feeders need more.
